Ask Any Dummy: Seat Belts Make Sense

When wise-cracking crash dummies Vince and Larry set out to discover a safety alternative to wearing seat belts, they come back repeatedly to the same conclusion: There is no better way to ride safely in a car than to buckle-up. With more than a few chuckles (and a couple of awfully frightening controlled crashes), Vince and Larry deliver a life-saving message that is sure to "drive home" its seriousness.

Defensive Driving Tactics (3rd Ed.)

Two professional drivers demonstrate the difference between defensive driving and aggressive driving as they participate in a safe driving test. The program explains that defensive drivers are always aware of traffic conditions, other vehicles, and pedestrians. Aggressive drivers are shown to be hurried, distracted, and overconfident. Their behavior puts them, and others, at risk. The program teaches about types of drivers to watch out for, such as inattentive drivers, fatigued drivers, and drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Distracted Driving

Each year, more than 40,000 people are killed in motor vehicle crashes and over 3 million are injured. While most of us are aware of the dangers associated with drunk driving or speeding, we usually don?t consider the risks of distracted driving. In Distracted Driving, viewers are introduced to potentially dangerous situations and given information to minimize the risks and make the roads safer for drivers and their passengers. Distracted Driving discusses five major types of distractions: cell phones and other gadgets, children, aggressive drivers, drowsiness, and traveling away from home. In each segment, dramatic reenactments illustrate the dangers, as well as the use of safe driving techniques. Good judgement, alertness, and patience are stressed as the basics of safe driving. Distracted Driving is an informative program that presents realistic solutions to a common problem. It provides viewers with the information they need to face the common task of driving with a new sense of attentiveness and responsibility.

DUI: Every 15 Minutes

As this memorable program opens, we see a variety of high school students on a typical Friday afternoon. They are smiling and relaxed?each one busy with friends, sports and after-school projects. Then comes the sound of a car sliding out of control, a horn blaring...the crash of metal and glass. A vivid reenactment shows the brutal aftermath of an alcohol-related car crash. It is the final destination for four teenagers on a Friday night. It is also the highly realistic simulation of an actual event. Each haunting scene that follows shows a different consequence of the crash. From a parent hearing about the loss of her child, to the failed attempts to save an airlifted patient, we witness the inescapable anger and helplessness felt by the victims. Equally effective are glimpses of the driver?s ordeal?from humiliation and arrest at the scene of the crash, to the pain and fear of sobering up at the police station. The program ends with images of the victims, along with names and brief descriptions of the real young people involved in the crash. Together, their faces make for a powerful ending that will not be easily forgotten.

The National Driving Test

The National Driving Test Series Hosted by Robert Urich

Most drivers can operate an automobile and travel to their destination without incident. But, just how much do they really know or even remember about driving safety? This program provides forthright media support for Driver Education courses as it helps students test their skill and knowledge levels, and their capacity for handling traffic situations and possible hazards. The program presents 25 questions that cover an extensive variety of driving situations including: driving near trucks, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians; approaching an accident or debris in the roadway; using seat belts; making lane changes; identifying traffic signs; handling skids and engine malfunctions; and driving under the influence. As viewers respond to the questions, they score points if they\'ve answered correctly. At the program\'s conclusion, the total points acquired will give viewers an excellent indication of their own driving knowledge and ability.

Road Rage and Aggressive Driving: A View From the Driver's Seat

Maury Hannigan, Commisioner Emeritus, CHP

"Road rage" is deliberate, violent behavior by a driver in response to a real or imagined traffic grievance. It occurs when something "snaps" in a driver who might usually be a careful, law-abiding motorist. "Aggressive" drivers are motorists who often ignore traffic laws, and drive erratically as their "normal" pattern of behavior. Aggressive drivers may trigger road rage in others, or may develop road rage themselves. This timely program supports driver education units regarding factors that contribute to impaired driving, particularly the effects that attitudes and emotions have on driving skills and decisions. The video also provides valuable examples for life skills units on anger management. Students learn safety measures to follow if they are the object of an enraged driver, and how to manage their emotions behind the wheel to avoid becoming enraged themselves. The message is reinforced by examples of the consequences of road rage episodes. Students learn that these tragedies can be prevented by adopting a cooperative driving attitude and giving other drivers the benefit of the doubt.

Safe Driving for Teens

This program presents teens with a crucial strategy for safe driving: don?t be a doofus behind the wheel! Demonstrations of clueless driving by Doofus Clueless ? the human crash test dummy lend a light touch to the program, while testimonials from crash survivors poignantly underline the basic fact: driving is a serious job, not an occasion for goofing off. The importance of seatbelt use is underscored with revealing statistics regarding crash survival, and the many tragic consequences of DUI incidents are powerfully detailed. In the end the messages boil down to one: don?t be a doofus ? always think when you drive!!

Red Asphalt Videos
Red Asphalt V

Red Asphalt V-- Just out! Brand new for 2006. This latest video is hosted by a teenager and is primarily intended to influence teen attitudes toward safe driving, although most adults would surely benefit from viewing it as well. 42,000 people are killed each year in the U.S. as a result of car crashes. That's equivalent to the loss of two jumbo jets every week.

The video points out that the number one cause of death for teens is car crashes. There are more than a dozen graphic scenes of dead motorists consisting of mangled faces and bodies as well as intestines and severed limbs on the road. It is probably the most graphic of all the Red Asphalt videos and promises to be the most effective. There are several interviews with the families and friends of the victims displaying the devastating effect that the death of their loved one has had on their lives. This video is sure to catch the attention of the viewer and will hopefully lead to less injuries and fatalities on the road.

The DVD also includes a Spanish version. Only on the DVD, not the VHS. Broadband connection recommended to preview this film clip

Red Asphalt IV
This video came out in 1998. It is less gruesome than the previous ones, yet many find it more touching due to the fact that so many young drivers are injured or lose their lives. Their family and friends are interviewed and it is quite disheartening. For you teens, please remember that, aside from drivers over the age of 65, you have the highest fatality rate of any age group. Contrary to popular belief, you are not made of steel. Be careful on the road. Don't do something foolish that you will regret for the rest of your life.

Red Asphalt III
Produced in 1989, SUVs were just coming into vogue. The DUI laws were still not nearly as strict as they are today leading to some unfortunate incidents on the highways. One particular scene involves an intoxicated driver who rolled over his SUV on the freeway. Unfortunately, the poor victim had his skull severed in half as the vehicle rolled, leaving half of his brain on the roadway to be picked up by the emergency personnel. Please don't drink and drive. Red Asphalt II
This video came out in 1979. It seems like everyone back then was driving around a huge 3 ton gas guzzler. Normally the larger the car that you drive the safer you will be in an accident, but many people still did not use their seat belts in those days, even though most cars came equipped with them, and the extremely high speed limits contributed to some absolutely devastating accidents. Try to keep your vehicle as close to the speed limit as possible while going with the flow of traffic.

Red Asphalt I
This is the original Red Asphalt from the early 60s. It is very interesting to see all these classic 50 year old cars. Unfortunately, they didn't come equipped with seat belts, much less airbags, so you can image the severity of some of these accident scenes. Did you know that you are 25 times more likely to be killed in an auto accident if you are thrown from your car? Make sure to always use your seat belt.
